Our summer book club read was The Space Between Us, which is the story of two women in current day India, one an upper middle class widow and the other her house servant. While the story grabs you almost immediately, the author creates an amazing sense of place and develops her characters well, I have to say it was the most depressing stories I think I’ve ever read.
While I figured it the bit of mystery early on, I still kept wishing the characters would do what was right, kept waiting for the happy ending, for the villains to get their due, for the heroines to get their just rewards but nothing. Life went on as much as it always did without any closure.
I’m glad I read it but boy, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re taking some happy pills.
