We’ve been talking stats a lot (yes, there’s also a compulsive gambler gene in the family). Anyway, I thought I’d share what I have from The Cancer Institute of NJ.
If you have not had breast or ovarian cancer:
Condition | Mutation Carrier |
General Population |
---|---|---|
BC by age 50 | 33 – 50% | 2% |
BC by age 70 | 56-87% | 7% |
Ovarian cancer by 70 | 27-44% | <2% |
Male BC by age 70 | 6% | .05% |
If you have had breast or ovarian cancer:
Condition | Mutation Carrier |
General Population |
---|---|---|
Ovarian Cancer | 15% | not available |
BC after 5 years | 27% | 3.5% |
BC by age 70 | 64% | 11% |
Other cancer risks*
Condition | Mutation Carrier |
General Population |
---|---|---|
Prostate Cancer by 80 | 20% | 15% |
Pancreatic Cancer | 2-4% | <1% |
*They don’t have as much information on other cancer risks as they do for breast and ovarian.
Hi Evonne, thanks for getting in touch. It’s nice to “meet” you. 🙂
Girasoli, you got me!
Hi Kim,
My name is Evonne and I live in Melbourne Australia. Last year when I was planning a trip to Paris I stumbled upon SlowTravel and I stumbled upon you. I enjoyed reading the 100 things about you. I had a laugh because there were so many that were like me. For instance, I am a nerd and I love my coffee in the morning. Same as you – milk and no sugar. I love Star Trek a fact my children cannot fathom. I have a boy and girl. I am into computers and I hawe been working in IT for 25 years. So since last June I have been reading what you are up to. I hope that does not constitute stalking ): I love reading your recipes.
I just wanted you to know that I perceive you as a strong, funny woman and I know whatever you decide you will get through this. I also wanted you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
If I am reading this correctly, I just can not understand why that test (the expensive more thorough version) is not covered and automatic for all women with a family history.
