Last night we went for dinner at Sette Osteria, recommeded by Chiocciola on the Slow Travel Talk Forums. I was looking for an inexpensive place, near our hotel, where both the kids and adults could find something good to eat and this fit the bill just fine.
Sette serves brick-oven pizzas, pastas and some meat dishes, along with assorted appetizers. They do not take reservations, so when we first arrived, they told us it would be about a thirty-minute wait (around 7:45 on a Friday night) but by the time we had found places at the bar to wait, the hostess came back over to tell us she actually had a table right away. It wasn’t a great table, wedged against the window, along the small path between the bar, and window, leading to the kitchen, but with the kids, and not wanting to wait, it was fine (though people from the bar seemed to spill in our direction from time to time). I had also been worried about the acoustics in the room (it’s a big open arrangement) but though noisy, we were able to hear each other without issue.
I started with a rossini (like a bellini, except made with strawberry puree instead of peach), Chris had a glass of aglianico and the girls, sodas. We skipped appetizers as we had a big lunch but then Chris wanted a salad, so we shared the arugula salad with shaved parmegiano and finicchio (aka fennel), tossed with a lemon dressing. There was plenty for both of us and it was good.
For our entrees, I enjoyed the buccatini amatriciana (would order it again), Chris said his meat lasagna was “okay.” Sammi loved her gnocchi (with butter), and Becky liked her pizza margherita. I switched to Chianti during dinner and Chris had another glass of the aglianico. By the way, I thought their “by the glass” prices a bit high for wine, but they did have many reasonable bottles – probably should have gone that route.
We skipped dessert because across the street was a Starbucks and Becky had recently developed an addiction to Caramel Frappucinos that we chose to indulge. I believe the total bill came to $85 (without tip).
Basic food, decent prices, I would return.
