Played a little afternoon hooky today and hit the movies with my friend, Pam, to see Philomena. I’ve been wanting to see this for a while, but with Chris on his super hero, action-adventure, movie kick, the odds weren’t good that I’d see it before it hit HBO or Netflix (or on a flight to Florida or United). So when Pam mentioned on our way out of Book Club last night that she’d be up for playing hooky today and seeing a movie, I was all in.
Totally glad I went.
Based upon a true story, Philomena tells the tale of how a woman searches for her child, taken from her when he was a toddler.
I’m a big Judy Dench fan and I think she acts the part with not only a quiet dignity but through her character exudes a child-like innocence even after enduring the loss of her child as well as the subsequent cover-up.
Steve Coogan is the perfect compliment, really doing an amazing job conveying his feelings with the subtlest expressions.
It makes me want to read the book on which the movie is based, Philomena: A Mother, Her Son, and a Fifty-Year Search, which if I read the reviews correctly, focuses more on the child’s life than Philomena’s search. Still, I think it would be interesting (and angering and frustrating).
Definitely recommend the movie.
