Lest you think I haven’t been reading, you’re wrong I have. I just haven’t been writing my thoughts about the books down. So let me catch up now. I was supposed to read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil years ago, before a long weekend trip to Savannah. I just never got around to it. So when it became available through my local library, I decided to finally give a go.
Can’t say that I’m glad that I did. The book is really the author’s anecdotes about his time living in Savannah and the crazy characters he met there. Some were interesting, some not so much but I guess I felt I’d just read “this book” several times before, only then it was the anecdotes of people who resettled in Italy and the local villagers or townspeople they met there. Different stories, different people, different location but really in a way, the same, and I just felt kind of over it. Compound that with the belief that I thought this book would focus more on the murder of a young ne’er do well by a wealthy eccentric, only to be disappointed that this made up for maybe 25% of the story line with a completely unfulfilling finish.
So if you’re traveling to Savannah, and you like the type of book about quirky locals, go for it, otherwise I’d give it a skip.
