Have I mentioned that Becky is going to study abroad at University of Edinburgh next semester? Well, she is, and so I’m going for a visit.
In preparation for that visit, I started to scour Amazon.com to find books related to Scotland and Edinburgh, especially historical fiction and mysteries, which I love to read. That’s how I stumbled upon the first book, Enter Second Murderer, in Alanna Knight’s Inspector Faro Series, staring Jeremy Faro as a 19th century detective inspector on the Edinburgh police force. At a cost of only $.99 for my Kindle, how could I refuse?
In my mind, this is right up there with Agatha Christie in that it’s a decent mystery, not too gory that actually had me guessing until the end. Yes, there were clues along the way, but like Detective Faro, they rumbled around in the back of my brain only because I was predisposed to believe someone else to be the murderer, if only for shock value (don’t want to say too much to give it away).
Though I found the story dragged a bit near the end, maybe it was one chapter too long, and certain points were repetitive (e.g., yes, we get it, Vince, Detective Faro’s stepson was a bastard child), I still found it entertaining. And, I already learned of something I would like to see while in Edinburgh (Arthur’s Seat).
So at that bargain-basement price, I would definitely tell you to give the series a shot. I’m off to buy the second in the series, Blood Line, now.
