D is for Deadbeat is the fourth in Sue Grafton’s alphabet series of books. Once again we’re spending time with heroine, Kinsey Millhone, a private detective in Santa Teresa California. Kinsey is in hot pursuit of a client that stiffed her with a bad check only to have him show up dead. While technically not a cozy mystery because Kinsey is “in the industry” to me it still feels like one. What I enjoy about these books though is that they happen pretty much in “real time” meaning, each book pretty much picks up where the previous book left off, with maybe a few weeks lag time. While I figured out the “mystery” in this one early on, the ending still shocked me. And actually, the only thing I wish is more a reflection in the next book, E is for Evidence, in that I wish they’d delved into the reprucussions of the ending from this book in the next. Either way, if you like the series, this does not disappoint.
