Wednesday night about an hour after getting home, I crashed big time. Nausea, exhaustion, you name it. I took some atavin and crashed – slept through the night.
Thursday, well, it’s a blur but for two 90 minutes where we dropped Sammi at the mall while Chris and I went back to the doctor to get a shot that is supposed to boost my white blood cells. Took some meds – names are upstairs.
Then home again, more drugs that are supposed to help with the nausea but don’t; they just knock me out.
Yesterday, was the worst so far, lots of nausea, lots of sleeping, lots of not getting comfortable. Lots of wishing I had a rifle. I think I did manage to shower once. I ate a handful of captain crunch, two bites of apple sauce, sipped about 3 ounces of juice and threw up for the first time last night. Felt a bit better afterwards though.
Chris called the doc and they’re going try a new med next week but want to check my white blood cells first. Turns out, by the way, you’re more likely to suffer from chemo nausea if you suffered from morning sickness, ooh wish someone would have shared those pearls of wisdom with me five days ago. Next cycle they’re putting me on Emend; not sure why they didn’t start with that.
Just made some jello – i have a craving. Crazy? Will take four hours before it gels. Sipped about four ounces of water this morning too. So far it’s staying down. Pray I’ve turned a corner.

Kim, It just sucks! just remember it’s temporary. There WILL be a day when this is all over.
Hugs,
jan
Hey, Kim. Hope you are feeling better today.
Thank you so much for keeping these blog entries going. It is the next best thing to being able to pop in on you in person to see how you’re feeling.
Kim, I’m sending good thoughts your way to feel better soon . . .
I was going to mention the quick way to make jello, but I see that Judy has already done so.
Take care of yourself now.
Apple juice used to help me. Never drink it except when coming off medical treatment or surgery – litle sips tasted wonderful. OJ was too acidic. Cravings are good so give in. For my spouse, it’s Gerber Baby Rice cereal.
So sorry you had a crappy reaction. 🙁
Hoping that was the worst of it, and that you’re in for *much* better days ahead!!
Kim – there are definitely times when jello is the only answer. A tip — there’s a speed-set method for making jello (just found it on one of the package end flaps).
Stir 3/4 C boiling water into gelatin in bowl for at least 2 minutes, until completely dissolved. Mix 1/2 C cold water with enough ice cubes to make 1 – 1/4 cup. Add to gelatin, stir until slightly thickened. Remove any unmelted ice. Refrigerate 30 minutes for soft-set or 1 to 1-1/2 hrs. until firm.
Another thing that you might like – use ginger ale (good for the stomach) instead of some of the water.
Hope the change in meds will make you feel less crappy.
(by the way – if you haven’t tried it, the apricot jello is really good).
Judy
Kim, I’m so sorry to hear that you’re feeling so crappy (or, rougher than a badger’s arse — I like that expression.)
I hope the Jello helps and that you can get the rest you need. Maybe juice is too acidic just now. How about bread pudding instead?
I am also so sorry to hear that your first chemo reaction was the pits.
I have no knowledge in this area but have learned that if I don’t take my migraine meds at the first sign my migraine will be much worse. As I said, I have no knowledge with the nausea and feeling like crap from chemo, but the meds might work better if you take them right after chemo – regardless of how you feel??
I hope the proposed changes will help with your next session.
Emend…why on earth it wouldn’t have been given to you right away. I’d ask about that, for sure! Why not, it might help – can’t hurt, right?
Me, again

Aiiiyaiii, Kim…I’m SO sorry that this hit you like a ton of bricks. Weird how it doesn’t come on right away, but delays until hours afterwards.
Jello: it’ll be smooth and sweet in your mouth and very cool and soothing to swallow. You’ve likely seen it already jelled in the supermarket. Maybe ask Chris to go on a mercy mission to the grocer’s for a few 6 pacs of pre-set Jello.
Huge hugs,
Brenda

Kim-I’m so sorry that the chemo is making you feel so sick. Hopefully they’ll find something soon that will help. Hang in there, it will get better I’m sure.
I’m glad you are feeling a little bit better. What can I bring you today?
Kim, I’m sending up a prayer to all the gods. Maybe it’s just the initial insult to your system?
Emend sounds good; I’ve never used it but have heard some positive things about it.
Another thing to consider are those acupressure bracelets that you wear around your forearm. Chris could probably pick them up for you in any sporting goods-type store. Directions are usually in the box, but the bracelets have a bead that you position over a certain”meridian” on your arm, and that is supposed to be a nausea gatekeeper.
I’ve occasionally used them successfully for heartburn, and they’re used all the time for morning sickness, with varying degrees of success.
Bottom line, it couldn’t hurt.
