Though disappointed with certain aspects of the previous Kathy Reich’s book in the “Bones” series, Cross Bones, I continued on with the next, Break No Bones and I enjoyed this one a bit more.
This time, we find Temperance Brennan located in South Carolina low country on an archeological dig when she unearths a not so historic set of bones and from there, as always, mayhem ensues.
Now let me tell you, like Jessica Fletcher, I wouldn’t want to be friends with Temperance Brennan because so far her best friend, her sister, her nephew and now her ex husband were collateral damage in her quest for justice and it bothers me that the author feels the need to harm those in her heroine’s circle in order to demonstrate a) the risk to our heroine or b) that she would need that for motivation to pursue the truth. That said, I am glad that for once our heroine didn’t go out of her way to put herself in danger, though as usual it found her in the end.
Aside from the spoiler-laden criticism, the book introduced enough extra characters, some red herrings and a bit of which-man-will-she-choose tension to keep me entertained. I’m glad I read it.
