An Impartial Witness is the second in the Bess Crawford Mysteries written by Charles Todd. In it we rejoin Bess as she’s escorting wounded soldiers home where she witnesses an exchange in a train station that sends her chasing down another mystery.
I can already see how this goes, like all other serial mysteries, where the main character is not in the field (e.g., a bounty hunter, a policeman, a private eye), you begin to wonder how do they end up involved in so many crimes, and you want to warn people to stay out of her way lest you end up dead (I call it the Jessica Fletcher syndrome). Though, since this is only the second in the series, I’m not feeling that burden yet. Furthermore, I enjoy the author’s voice and ability to create scene and person. Lastly, I enjoy the time frame and I like Bess (she’s not infallible).
That said, I have to admit, I solved this one way at the beginning of the story and kept reading just to confirm I was right (I was). Still I’m glad I read it and have already picked up the third in the series (no wait at the library), and have plowed into it, hoping perhaps PBS might pick u this series and make it a Masterpiece Mystery too!
Anyway, if you like a cozy, go for it!
