A Pattern of Lies is the seventh and apparently last in the Bess Crawford series available at my library. In this story we once again join Bess as she shuffles between the war in France and England, this time helping the family of a former patient defend themselves from some heinous accusations. Of course Bess can’t help but interject herself into the mystery surrounding the explosion at the family’s ammunition plant and it’s not long before she’s in danger.
Even though the formula is well established and I do think there are problems with the timing of this story (i.e., it takes place in the fall of 1918 and yet with all the lapsed time we didn’t butt up against the armistice on November 11), I still enjoyed A Pattern of Lies, found the pace fine and as an added bonus, while I’d guessed who was behind the crime, I did not guess to whom that translated to in terms of story characters until the end. So yes, although I will now have to pay to read the next installment, I will gladly do so.
