So after finishing the second book in the Bess Crawford series, An Impartial Witness, I went over to my library’s website to put the third book, A Bitter Truth, on hold so I’d have it to read in a few weeks. Lo and behold, there was no wait, so rather than moving on to the next one in the Temperance Brennan series, I decided to read it instead. Glad I did.
In this installment, Bess finds a frightened woman literally on her doorstep, and going along with the saying that no good deed goes unpunished, after she invites the woman to stay, Bess ends up embroiled in her family’s issues and mysteries, which of course eventually include murder.
This book went back more to the first book in feel of the story, like another gothic romance, with bits of war time thrown in for good measure. And I have to be honest, if it weren’t for two random lines in the book near the beginning of the story, I wouldn’t have figured out the murder at all until the reveal, and honestly, even though I had a hunch, I was never really that sure.
I’m really enjoying this series and am looking forward to the next installment.
